Meet Amy, Our New HR Director!

Can you believe Baudville was without an HR manager for six months? It seems crazy—mostly, I guess, to those who were trying to maneuver this ship without one. But, if it proves anything, it’s that we are committed to our stance that hiring slow is an onboarding best practice. And, now that we have the perfect candidate in place, we can pat ourselves on the back for our diligence. Whew!

Amy has been with us since the beginning of May—just in time to help reinstitute our summer flex time policy, put recruiting into high gear, and attend SHRM with the rest of the team. If this hasn’t blown her hair back a little, then she must be using Extra Super Hold Aqua Net!

I caught up with Amy recently to see how she’s braving this new adventure, and this is what she had to say:

  1. What attracted you to Baudville and made you decide to apply for this position?

    Initially my interest was sparked because of Baudville’s reputation as a leader in employee recognition and awards. As I learned more about the organization, I was impressed with the company’s resilience and was intrigued by the hi5 and IDville brands as well. The size of the company and the local ownership and operation was also appealing to me.
  1. What was your first impression of Baudville?

    My first impression of Baudville really came well before I considered the organization as an employer. I dreamed of using Baudville products but found myself in a budget-tight organization with a management team that had difficulty focusing on the benefit of intentional employee recognition. I have found that Baudville really does “walk the talk.” Employee recognition isn’t something that we just sell, it’s something that we believe in.
  1. How did we do on your first day? Have we been walking the talk with our onboarding program?

    My first day was great! My office space was set up well and decorated to make me feel welcomed. I was paired with a familiar face first and lots of introductions were made. I was presented with a nice gift, a schedule for my first 3 weeks, and a map of the building, and was able to spend time with my boss and the individual who would introduce me to many of the HR practices and procedures. It’s normal for anyone to feel some stress and anxiety during their first day at a new job. I believe Baudville recognized that and had a well thought out and executed “Welcome” that minimized any level of nervousness that may have existed when I first walked in the door.

  1. What has been your biggest challenge since joining the ‘Ville?

    The biggest challenge for me has been having patience through the learning process. Coming from a job with the same employer for nearly 13 years, I would love to fast forward through this time of learning and regain the level of comfort that is gained in an organization through years of experience.
  1. What has been the most interesting, rewarding, or surprising aspect of this new position?

    The friendliness and willingness to help from employees at all levels has been great.
  1. How is being an HR Manager at Baudville different than other companies you’ve worked for?

    The biggest difference that I have been adjusting to is not having other HR professionals working with me every day. While at previous employers, I worked within a team of six or more educated and trained HR professionals. I’ve learned to appreciate the details of HR work again and am very grateful to all of the staff here who have assisted in getting me acclimated to the Baudville way.
  1. You just returned from SHRM. Was this your first time being part of the expo instead of attending the conference? What did you learn from this experience?

    I was privileged to attend SHRM as both a conference attendee and a representative of Baudville. The sessions I attended were great and provoked some “out-of-the-box” HR thinking. I was overwhelmed by the number of attendees and impressed with the positive reputation that Baudville holds with that audience. I heard many attendees say that Baudville’s approach to recognition is refreshing, modern, and inspiring. I enjoyed watching our sales force in action and getting to know those in our group a bit better.
  1. What are you most excited about for the future?

    Growing with the organization. Learning more about our industry, growing professionally, and working with the managers and staff as their lines of business grow. I am also excited to be a part of the growth and development of our employees.
  1. When you’re not at the ‘Ville, what are some of your favorite activities?

    My husband and I have two kids who are growing up way too fast, so spending quality time with them is one of my favorite things to do. We don’t have to have big adventures to have fun. You might find us playing a competitive game of whiffle ball in the front yard, taking a trip to our favorite ice cream joint, Captain Sundae, hanging out in Downtown Holland, or kayaking and paddle boarding on the small lake that my parents live on. We love to vacation in Gulf Shores, Alabama and in the Winter even I will enjoy a trip or two down the sledding hills. It’s not all that complicated and some might even say it’s really boring, but it’s a great way for us to find balance between two full-time jobs and the demands of life.
