Memorable and Effective Award Presentation Tips

When making an award presentation, it's important to remember that this may be the one opportunity your recipient is publically recognized by his or her employer. To make the award memorable and effective, plan both the award ceremony and the events leading up to it. Your careful planning will ensure that the value of the award is clearly expressed and communicated.

It's also crucial to carefully plan what you will say at the award presentation. Before your presentation, be sure to create a script. Many people are uncomfortable at an award ceremony in front of a crowd, and "winging it" can result in things being said which unintentionally take away from the award presentation. For example, it weakens the impact of an award presentation to say, "There are many people we could be recognizing, but today we have brought Ellen before you." Once statements like this are out there (insinuating your recipient is not as special as you are about to make them appear), there is little you can do to recapture the magic of the moment. Before the Award Presentation

Preparing for your award presentation is the best way to ensure your award ceremony is memorable and effective at recognizing your recipients. Here is a list of events to consider before the award ceremony, including: • Each recipient should be informed of the award well in advance of the award ceremony or the event when the award will be presented.

• They should then receive a formal invitation and be encouraged to have family and friends accompany them.

• Press releases about the award and recipients should be sent to the media.

• Inform your internal audiences who might want to attend the presentation or to congratulate the recipient in another manner.

• Ask recipients to arrive in advance of the award ceremony or meeting. Reassure them that they and their guests will be given a briefing and an outline of how the award presentation will be made.

Planning the Award Presentation

Brief the presenter of the award on the format for the award presentation. Here is a list of events to consider including:

The presenter begins with a salutation to the people present and a brief statement of who he or she is, what business he or she represents, what awards are being presented, and who the recipients are.

• The recipient joins the presenter at the podium or front of the room.

• The presenter invites the award recipient to introduce any family or guests.

• The presenter describes the award and tells how and why the recipient was selected.

• The presenter hands the award to the recipient, and shakes his or her hand.

• Invite leaders of your organization to personally congratulate the recipient.

• Give the recipient an opportunity to thank the sponsor, organization, and their peers.


After the Award Presentation

Creating an effective award presentation doesn't end at the conclusion of your award ceremony. Here is a list of events to consider after the award ceremony:

• Host a small reception just for the award recipients and their families or guests.

• Publish pictures from the event in your newsletter, intranet, or Facebook page.

• Include an article about the award recipients and the award ceremony in your organization's newsletter.

• Send a press release about the award ceremony to local media including your pictures.
