Celebrate National Doctor's Day!

March 15, 2010

Celebrate National Doctor's Day on March 30th! National Doctor's Day was created to show appreciation to doctors who perform vital diagnosis, treatment, and care for you and your family. When you are well, your doctor keeps you well. When you are sick, there is no person more important to you than your doctor! In this article, we share a brief history of the day and also give you some great ideas on how to celebrate doctors!

History:
National Doctor’s Day observances date back to March 30, 1933, when Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a doctor, decided to honor physicians on a specific day. Her recognition was simple and meaningful in the form of sending greeting cards and placing flowers on the graves of deceased doctors.

On March 30, 1958, the United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating National Doctor's Day. In 1990, Congress approved legislation establishing National Doctor's Day, and the resolution was signed into law in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush.

Recognition Ideas:
National Doctor's Day serves as a reminder for patients, staff, and colleagues to recognize the doctors who play an important role in our communities and our lives. There are many ways you can celebrate the contributions of doctors.

If National Doctor's Day falls on a weekend, you can celebrate in the office on a different day. Don't be disappointed, you can use this to your advantage! Surprise the doctors you're recognizing by having someone get to the office early to place an appreciation gift at their desks or workstations. That way, they will have a surprise waiting for them when they get to work. This is a great way to begin National Doctor's Day celebration.

Include a greeting card or thank you card with your National Doctor's Day gift that everyone can sign. For a greater impact, have each nurse or staff member write their own note of appreciation on a note card. This way, the Doctor will have multiple cards to open and feel all the more appreciated with the kind words they contain.

Take your honorees out to lunch, or create a lunch in their honor. A staff potluck is a low-cost way to have a team lunch, and it allows the staff to swap recipes, too! Whether you go out to lunch or bring lunch in, National Doctor's Day is a great time for doctors and their staff to build camaraderie.

After the National Doctor's Day morning kick-off, we recommend a gift or gift card tailored to the doctor's interest, like golf, movie-watching, bowling, fly fishing, cars, etc. End the day with a sweet sendoff rooted in appreciation, like a cake, homemade cookies, or a food gift. We've never heard of a doctor's office or hospital here food gifts aren't a hit and appreciated by all!
