10 Questions to Ask New Hires

Not only is a good onboarding process designed to help immerse new hires into their new roles and the company’s culture, it also should be used as a resource to learn from the new hire’s fresh perspective.

BambooHR reported that new hires want these in their first week:

  • 79% want on-the-job training
  • 73% want a review of company policies
  • 59% want a company tour, equipment setup, and procedures
  • 56% want a buddy or mentor
16.45% of people leave within the first week, and 31% of people quit their jobs within the first six months

To prevent your new hires from deciding to go elsewhere and get a better understanding of what they need out of their onboarding experience, it’s important to conduct a first week survey. This will allow you to assess how the onboarding process is going so far and what to tweak as you move forward.

New hires will also appreciate the opportunity to give feedback and feel valued. Here are 10 questions you should be including in your new hire’s first week survey.

First Week Survey Questions

  1. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best) how would you rate your first day orientation experience? Please explain your rating.
  2. Do you feel welcomed by your new team members?
  3. So far, is your role what you expected it to be? If not, what is different?
  4. Do you have any questions on what your job responsibilities are?
  5. What is one thing you are most excited for in your new role?
  6. What is one thing that concerns you about your new role?
  7. What is one thing you would like to learn about or go over in your onboarding that isn’t currently outlined in your onboarding schedule?
  8. How do you like to be recognized best? (one-on-one manager recognition, notes of praise, company-wide acknowledgement, etc.)
  9. Are you aware of who you can go to for questions about your role and/or onboarding process?
  10. In one word, how would you describe your first week?
