Can We Talk About the Power of Recognition?

May 15, 2014

I'd love to tell you that I don't love to toot my own horn, but, the truth is, I'm a tooter. Sometimes you simply have to take matters into your own hands! A solo performance isn't a bad thing once in a while, but it is nothing like when everyone picks up an instrument and starts playing in your personal symphony.

That's exactly what happened to me the other day and I couldn't have been more shocked and overwhelmed. I had gotten wind that the management team was using the latest issue of RecogNation as a discussion point for their weekly meeting, but what a surprise when I walked past our Shout Outs boards and saw a whole panel dedicated to me and the writing I do for this publication! (I should point out that the creation of RecogNation is a team effort, with top-notch design that makes it look beauteous, tons of research that helps it sound smarter, and leadership guidance that lends real-life experience to the words that I string together. Just so you know!)

That said, I truly felt as if I had won an award and my brain swirled for the rest of the day with all kinds of thoughts. My big take-aways from this experience are these:

1. It is really easy to make your employees feel special. Without a big ceremony, without waiting until year end, without even spending a dime. Any day has the possibility to be someone's big day, if you actually take a moment to make it one.

2. This recognition came to me at a time when I really needed it. Really, really. Unless your employees are signing autographs on a daily basis, I'll bet you have a lot of team members who need a confidence boost or a pat on the back, too. The acknowledgement you give them today I promise will have a positive impact on tomorrow. And the next day, and the next day.

3. There is always room to learn more. At Baudville, we're expected to be the experts, and, yet, even we can learn from our own selves—by taking a look at the advice we're giving, and thinking about how we can apply it to our own daily actions and behaviors.

So, on that note, I encourage all of you to think about the small things you can do that could end up being major game changers. And, by all means, check out the latest issue of RecogNation—I hear it's a pretty good read!
