Celebrate the Good Guys!

May 12, 2014

I'm really not a bad person, but I have always been a bit of a mischief-maker. That combined with the exhilaration I feel when I really get to test the power of a fast sports car...well, let's just say I might not have been the best person to write about my positive experiences with police officers! Enter Jenny, our newest contributor to the blog, who was more than happy to take my assigned post on Police Week, May 11-17. Thanks, Jenny!

Jenny is a recent addition to the Web Team, and we're happy to have her fresh perspective on the Baudville Blog! Read what she has to say about those who serve and protect (and who are on high alert when I'm on the roads!).

Often when we think of Police Officers, we usually will have a "oh this one time I was pulled over" story. We tend to associate negative experiences with Police Officers, because it's their jobs to enforce the laws that we sometimes break. But, really, whose fault is that again?!

When I think of Police Officers, I think of my grandpa. Now he was known for his stories! You can ask anyone who knew him, they could tell you at least five of his stories. You could probably ask a stranger too, because they were sure to know at least one or two stories if he stopped them and they were willing to listen!

My grandpa worked as a Police Sergeant for 38 years! (Yes – 38!!) He had retired by the time I was born, but you could tell he loved his job, and he was still so passionate about it. He recently passed, but until the day he died, he would pull out his badge, that he carried in his wallet, and show it to every person he met, He'd always say "I am Sergeant Sam!" He'd them tell a story about back in the day when he had chased down a crook or rescued someone. If you'd sit and listen, he'd talk all day!

It amazed me, throughout the years, how many people remembered him! How many people we would see in passing that would stop to say thank you. Sometimes for things he had done 20 + years back. People remembered who he was, and what he did, because he loved his job and he was passionate about it day in and day out. From the countless stories I have heard, it wasn't anything close to easy.

This week is National Police Week: a week set a side that pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. So not only this week, but whenever you can be sure to say thank you next time you see an officer. Because they aren't always the bad guys pulling you over!
