Celebrating Volunteer Week

March 23, 2022 Scott Gillis

We are approaching National Volunteer Week (April 17-23) and it is time to shine a spotlight on this wonderful yearly event and to celebrate volunteers, recognize their impact, and encourage volunteerism in our communities. From Gallup, "Eighty-one percent of Americans say they donated money to a religious or other charitable organization in the past year, and 56% volunteered time to such an organization." (Source)

This is a wonderful statistic to read, but why do people volunteer? With all that goes on in day to day life, what propels an individual to set aside their own wants in the service to help others? For some, it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others, it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge.

From the Harvard Business Review: " Many studies have shown that volunteer programs boost productivity, increase employee engagement, and improve hiring and retention." ( Source ).

While these sources and statistics paint a beautiful picture of increased engagement and giving back to ones community, how do we celebrate and appreciate these stand out humans?

#1 Thank You Card  – When is the last time you received an actual card in the mail from a person? Give them a personal touch with a hand written note thanking them for all their selfless hard work.

#2 For Their Selfless Work, Show Them They Are One Amazing Human - Sometimes the selfless work being done deserves a gift that reminds them of what an amazing human they are and the world is a better place with them in it.

#3 Sometimes a Daily Reminder With Every Sip is Necessary - Like the thank you note a small token of your appreciation is always a welcomed gesture. Especially when it includes an imprint with a continual affirmation of the difference they make.

Yeah, yeah, we know they don’t do it for the attention or the praise, but just like with  employee recognition, volunteer recognition is essential.  Everyone wants a little recognition once in a while and volunteers are no exception.

Recognition is defined as the identification of something as being seen, heard, or known. With volunteers, this means being aware of the time they’ve put in, acknowledging the tasks they’ve completed, and knowing their value to your team and organization.

Baudville Brands’ is no stranger to volunteering our time in our own community. Our nonprofit, Baudville’s Helping Hand,  works to instill hope, dignity, and purpose in the lives of children by partnering with charitable organizations who engage young people in the areas of education, public health, social justice, and environmental preservation.

See our video from the wonderful group at Ele's Place. We were able to dedicate resources and manpower to redoing their space to make it even more effective and rewarding for the kids who need it most. ( Source ). If you want to know more about Baudville's Helping Hand visit our page here

Celebrate all your fabulous volunteers the week of  National Volunteer Week, April 17th through 23rd! We know that if it weren’t for them, you couldn’t make your community impact happen.
