First Day of Spring & Seasonal Affective Disorder in the Workplace

We are getting closer to Spring, with warmer temperatures, birds chirping and more outdoor activities. As we come out of the doldrums of Winter, we need to discuss the topic of Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder (SAD). "According to the National Mental Health Association (NMHA), SAD affects 10 million Americans, mostly women in their 20s." ( Source)
 
When it comes to your staff’s health and wellbeing, it is important to be proactive and recognize the symptoms of SAD and become educated on how to help prevent or reduce the risk of employees developing SAD symptoms. "Those who suffer from SAD or the winter blues may experience lethargy, difficulty waking up in morning, decreased energy levels, weight gain, and lower concentration levels." ( Source)  
 
To help your employees overcome seasonal affectiveness disorder and start to enjoy the positive impacts of Spring, take these few helpful tips to keep your employees engaged while the sun starts to shine outside.
 
1. Get Outside
At least once a week, plan some time to take a walk outside in the sun for a bit. The fresh air will not only clear your mind, but will help those with symptoms of Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder feel better. You will feel refreshed while the exercise keeps your blood flowing. This will motivate you and increase your productivity when you get back to your desk.
 
You can also take your lunch and eat outside, or at least near a window. Get away from your desk and your computer, enjoy your lunch, and take in the environment. If you can at least get some warmth from the sun on you, you will be happier and more productive for the remainder of the workday.

2. If You Are At Your Desk, Let the Light Shine
Open the blinds and curtains in the office to let some natural light in. The sunshine brightens the room, perks up employees, and increases work efficiency.
