October is breast cancer awareness month and with that we will be bombarded with pink products and events to get involved with. The famous pink ribbon has been the emblem to promote breast cancer awareness every October since the early 90s.
Why do we bring awareness to this disease every October? “About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 13%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2021, an estimated 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 49,290 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. Source.
This disease has touched almost everyone in some way and your company, and its employees will be hard-pressed to not be affected. With this month of awareness spanning almost 30 years most companies will want to show support through information, prevention ideas, and products to bring support to those who have won the battle and those who are fighting. This promotion and awareness will be especially prevalent within hospitals, public health organizations, and non-profits.
Here are Five ways to get your company involved and ready for #Pinktober
- Encourage employees to share their stories
Encourage employees to share personal experiences of this disease and how it has affected them. The more people that hear firsthand how this affects people brings more awareness to this issue. Promote these stories on social with #Pinktoberstories
- Get prevention information out to clients and employees
Linking your company to prevention is a great way to advocate for the cause while bringing goodwill to your brand. A great example would be to send out email newsletter for best practices for early detection.
- In office you can dedicate a day of pink
Set aside at least one day where everyone can show their support by wearing pink at work. You can even get your very own team gear here. Just ask your rep for a custom pink color for your event
- Promote Health and Fundraise
Get your employees to participate in a walk to show support and promote the fact that for every mile walked the company will donate $1 towards cancer research or to support survivors.
- Show your team members love
If any of your team members have been affected show your appreciation of them through personal notes of praise and support or a gift. Be sure to continue this practice past October.
