Race, Crash, & Rescue: Recognition at Work, Superhero Style!

June 11, 2015

I have 4 little boys at home. I am surrounded underfoot by trains, trucks, tractors, and superheroes. We race, we crash, and we rescue on a daily basis. Although we’re making up these scenarios as we scoot across the kitchen floor, when I’m seated at my desk here at work there’s also a lot of racing, crashing, and rescuing happening on a daily basis.

We race to get to work on time. We race to get our daily tasks completed. We race to meet a deadline. Every day we race as fast as we can to fit in as much as we can. Before we know it, the day is done and we go to sleep only to wake up and do it all over again. What would happen if we slowed down? If only for a few minutes to take in the world around us, or to focus on one important task or decision for the day. How would that change our days?

And I’m not sure about you, but oftentimes when I’m racing to get things done, I sometimes end up in a crash. And when I crash land into the end of a project, or in the middle of a project, I need rescuing. When I sound my “rescue me whistle” at work, it’s not Batman, Spiderman, or Wonder Woman coming to my rescue, it’s usually Kimberly, or Denise, or CJ – real-life SUPERHEROES coming to my rescue! They help me pick up the pieces, tie up the loose ends, or come up with a whole new direction. They pick me up, dust me off, and put me back on my way. They may not even realize the impact of their kindness and willingness to help. And they certainly never look for anything in return. But they deserve it!
