The Beginners Guide to Celebrating National Nurses Week

We all know that nurses are, well, literal lifesavers. They dedicate their lives year-round to helping others and they touch hundreds of lives each day. For many reasons, nurses should be appreciated each and every minute of each and every day. But there is a time when that appreciation should be amplified and nurses should feel EXTRA special, and that’s during National Nurses Week.

This year, National Nurses Week is May 6-12. It’s a time to spread thanks and gratitude to all the incredible nurses who support and serve our most vulnerable community members. There are many ways you can celebrate, appreciate, and spread thanks this year.

5 Ways to Celebrate National Nurses Week

Public or Private Recognition: There is a time for both in the workplace, and many people have particular preferences about how and when they receive recognition. During Nurses Week, there is plenty of time to do both. How? Here’s some ideas:

  • Write a handwritten letter, thank you card, or email to your nurses. Small, intimate acts of appreciation go a long way because they feel personal.
  • Create a slideshow with photos of your team. Include words that describe each member, stories, or memories about them. Share with everyone!
  • During a morning huddle or afternoon lunch break, encourage team members to vocalize their appreciation for one another.

Gifts of Gratitude: When it comes to appreciation weeks, little gifts of gratitude are a MUST! Whether you want to give some fun drinkware or an everyday nursing essential, a small gift can have a great impact. Plus, it’s something they can use again and again, remembering each time that it comes with a message of gratitude.

Food and Togetherness: Food is a love language. Or at least, it is to me. People love food and the culture that surrounds it. There is nothing that brings people together quite like a delicious meal. This Nurses Week, you can use food as a tool for appreciation. Here’s some ideas how to do it:

  • Host a luncheon! It’s the perfect opportunity to cater in some amazing food while encouraging team members to chat and connect on a more personal level.
  • Give them a gift card to their favorite restaurant or a local hangout.
  • Bring them coffee! After a long day saving lives (literally), coffee might just save theirs (figuratively). Write down their orders, pick them up, and deliver them with an adorable coffee tag!

Branded Swag: Here at Baudville, getting new branded swag is as exciting as Christmas morning. I mean, who doesn’t love a cozy fleece, sweatshirtbag, or hat? Your nurses deserve something nice and new to wear…plus, these products are great for spreading brand awareness. It’s really a win-win.

Health and Wellness: Your nurses are reallllllly focused on the health and well-being of others. But how about their own? Encourage your nurses to get some R&R with the following:

  • Meditation, stretching, and breathing exercises: Invite your team members to take part in just 5 minutes of intentionality each day of Nurses Week. It’s a small something that can have rejuvenating effects.
  • Get creative: Provide coloring pages and pencils and encourage nurses to take a couple minutes for a creativity break.
  • Give them a self-care day gift. It’s like going to the spa, but from the comfort of their own home.

Whatever you do this National Nurses Week, make sure you do it with a focus on gratitude and appreciation for the incredible nurses in your life. They do so much for us, it’s time to do something extra special for them!
